SONiCBOOM Festival 2016 - DAY 1 - September 3, 2016

Dana Zuk September 7, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

The first day of Edmonton's SONiCBOOM Festival began with miserable weather, as the chilly winds of an early-arriving fall season whipped around the Borden Park festival grounds, which eventually turned into a light drizzle of rain. However, the dreary weather was no downer on the sold out opening day of the festivals eighth year. With a stacked bill of nine severely talented bands, and headlined by none other than the infamous Twenty One Pilots, Borden Park was in for one wild night.

Kicking off the festival with high spirits, hometown locals known as The Royal Foundry, had concert goers rushing towards the stage with sparked curiosity after passing through the ticket gates. Progressing on with fellow Canadian artists, Darcys, Wildlife and Hannah Georgas, all which kept the spirits of those gathered in front of the stage warmed and full of delight. Travelling all the way from Australia, Atlas Genius delivered a whole new dynamic to SONiCBOOM, taking advantage of moving around swiftly on stage, while encouraging the audience to follow their lead in order to keep warm. In tow of Atlas Genius, New Zealand's The Naked and Famous had the crowd singing and swaying along to each song, which forced smiles to crack through onto the band members faces. Completely turning up the excitement, July Talk changed the game on stage. With strangely intriguing flirtation between vocalists, the band came out with a bang; marching around, dancing and getting up close and personal with the audience, causing an outburst of shrieks and shouts from the fans in the front row. Beginning her set on top of a large LCD screen, Halsey cranked up the heat with her performance, including various blasts of C02 and pyro, the Brooklyn pop-artist pranced about throughout her performance, bringing an almost-sexy atmosphere to the festival, while pleasantly delivering her 13 song set with ease.

After much anticipation, the time had finally arrived for Saturday night's headliner to take the spotlight. Large LCD screens bordered the back of the stage, while pulsating various images in black and white, resulting in a eruption of screams from the packed field out front. Kicking off their set with 'HeavyDirtySoul', the two-some that makes up the entirety of Twenty One Pilots appeared, wearing red suits accompanied with black ski masks; fog machines and red lights were blasted, resulting in a silhouetted stage, casting a rather subliminal haunting image over their opening. Removing the red coats and ski masks, rolling on with various hits such as: 'Ride', 'Heathens', 'Lane Boy', 'Stressed Out', Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun fired on all cylinders for the duration of their performance, as if literally fueled by the audiences energy. Between covering songs by House of Pain and Dr.Dre, doing back flips on stage, crowd surfing a drum kit, and the vocalist rolling through the crowd in a large, inflatable hamster-ball, the guys had easily out performed every band that had played before them that day. Not necessarily in a negative way, but in a way that has lead them to have the audience eating out of the palms of their hands, so to speak, by their ability to successfully inspire and entice this generations youth unlike any other with their songs of living with imperfection and essentially going-against-the-grain with what's expected in life. Needless to say, opening day of SONiCBOOM 2016 had completely blown any speculation of the festival's teetering survival out of the park. SONiCBOOM Festival is alive, well, and still strong, and I for one, truly cannot wait to see what is in store for next year.

Zakk Wylde Shreds The Ranch Roadhouse to Bits on Edmonton Stop of "Book of Shadows II" Tour - August 23, 2016

Dana Zuk August 24, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

I haven't had a whole lot of inspiration to write much of anything lately, so this will be a short and sweet little blog about last night's much needed pick-me-up. Despite this downer mood that I've been in for the past few weeks, I had a wonderful time shooting the almighty Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society last night, as he graced Edmonton's Ranch Roadhouse with his own brand of shreddery; Appealing to the likes of those who flocked to the venue on Tuesday night to catch the buzz on his performance.

Loud As Hell Festival 2016 - DAY 3 - July 31, 2016

Dana Zuk August 4, 2016

My favorite time of year has come and gone once again, as the weekend of Loud As Hell festival smashed their sold-out, fifth year running in the badlands of Alberta! I couldn't be more proud of the people who work their asses off, year after year, to bring such a wicked event to the heavy metal community of not only Alberta, but to Canada as a whole. It's truly been an honor to be working with this festival for four years in a row now, and I really cannot wait to see what is in store for the festival in year six!

Unfortunately, due to a system hiccup, my snaps of days one and two have been banished from this life, forbidden to return to the lands of Windows, photoshop and social media. Luckily, however, day three's shots are alive and well, and I couldn't be more excited to show them off to you, the readers and metal lovers!

Despite a soggy morning from rain and unpleasant weather the night before, day number three of Loud As Hell V was the most wild one yet this year. As many festival goers began to file into the venue for the annual pancake breakfast, the spirits within the room were high with anticipation and excitement for Sunday's festivities. With Vancouver's own Unleash The Archers, headlining the third and final day of LAH, the day was sure to be a banger. With the likes of Ninjaspy, Disciples of Power, Without Mercy, Planet Eater, Third Ion, Expain, Display of Decay, The Avulsion, W.M.D, Slaughterhauser, Junkies Rush and Maimed Wolf in tow of Unleash The Archers, Drumheller, Alberta was leveled by the heaviness of this line up, consisting of nonstop double kicks and pure shreddery on all levels.

This is always my most favorite time of year. And for many reasons! It's just like one big heavy metal family reunion. Friends from different parts of the country all reuniting under the same circumstances, and partying like there's no tomorrow; Supporting and celebrating the mutual love for metal and those who inhabit the community which keeps this aggressive, underground music alive. By coming together in this year, we're not only supporting bands and festivals, we're supporting the lifestyle of being metal. We're stronger together than we are apart! Cheers, Loud as Hell! See you next year! LOUD AS HELL, DRUNK AS F*CK!

KISS Unleashes Freedom to Rock Tour on Edmonton - July 12, 2016

Dana Zuk July 18, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR EXCLAIM!.CA

After a weekend of camping in the mountains with some of my closest friends, I've finally had some time to collect my thoughts about my time spent shooting the one and only KISS last week. It was three years to the day since the hottest band in the world graced the stage at Rexall Place, bringing the heat with their current Freedom to Rock tour, KISS electrified Edmonton, and had Northlands park rockin' on Tuesday July 12th.

Being a huge fan of the band since I was little, having the chance to see them for the second time was just as magical as the first. The lights, the pyro, the theatrics! Turning those who gathered at Rexall Place into creatures of the night, who wanted nothing more than to rock and party the night away. From a photographers perspective though, being close enough to touch the members of the band was surreal to say the least, not to mention that having the "Star Child" himself, Paul Stanley, flick a guitar pick directly to me while I was shooting was something out of a dream.

This is certainly a memory that I will cherish forever. It's not all too often that concert photographers get an opportunity to photograph their favourite bands, so needless to say, I am quite honored to have had the chance to have rock n roll gods and hall-of-famers such as KISS in front of my lens. After an outstanding performance, and ending the concert on a high note, this gig will certainly be a hard one to top!

Canada's Finest Band Together to Support Fort McMurray at Fire Relief Concert - June 29, 2016

Dana Zuk July 5, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR LIVE NATION ALBERTA & VANDALA MAGAZINE

Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium was packed with 32, 000 screaming fans on Wednesday, June 29th, as some of Canada's finest musicians came together to put on a relief concert for those effected by the horrors that ensued, due to the largest wildfire that our province has ever seen in the northern Alberta city of Fort McMurray.

At the beginning of May, the blaze forced the biggest fire evacuation in our province's history, displacing roughly 88, 000 people, and destroying thousands of homes and business in the process, as it engulfed approximately 1.5 million acres of land in uncontrollable flames. It was not reported until TODAY - July 5th 2016 - that the fire has finally been declared under control. For more information on the Fort McMurray wildfire, visit the Wikipedia page for the fire HERE.

Despite the chaos that unsettled so many lives, the people of Alberta, and many across Canada, began to show unimaginable hospitality to those who had no choice but to flee the inferno. Families making their homes available for other families, crews of people rescuing pets who were left behind, and even local businesses offering free meals and clothing to those who had lost everything. 54 million dollars was donated to the Canadian Red Cross by the citizens of Canada and many across the world, along with many other donations from various charities and organizations.

It wasn't much longer after the evacuation that the Fire Aid concert was announced. The news of Ft. Mac had spread rapidly across the nation, and hit home for many Albertan and Canadian musicians, so many were jumping at the chance to help rally people together to support those in need. The concert was also being broadcast to a local sporting field in the Wood Buffalo community, so those who were able to return to their homes in Fort McMurray could still enjoy the concert.

Headlined by Canadian superstars, Nickelback, the Fire Aid featured a handful of artists of all genres such as: Blue Rodeo, City & Colour, Barney Bentall, Corb Lund, Randy Bachman & The Sadies, Dean Brody, The Rankin Family, Dallas Smith, Alan Doyle & The Beautiful Gypsies, Ian Tyson, Brett Kissel, High Valley, Dear Rouge, Harlequin and Dustin Bentall. Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium quickly filled up as the afternoon progressed, lucky that the weather was on our side, as thundershowers were estimated for the evening - Regardless, I don't think any amount of rain could have put a damper on this gig. With Vancouver's own, Nickelback, ending the night on a high note, the vibe within the stadium was beyond words. Smiling faces, and people embracing was a pleasant sight, but the overall sense of support and community that was shown to each and everyone of the audience members. As a concert photographer, I always wish to see things of that nature with each concert I shoot... Well, my wish was granted I couldn't feel more honored to have been a part of this once in a life time experience.

City & Colour Brings Acoustic Mastery to Rexall Place - June 10, 2016

Dana Zuk June 12, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR EXCLAIM!.CA

Gracing the City of Champions on Friday night was Canadian acoustic phenomenon, City & Colour. Accompanied by the talented fellow acoustic jammer Shakey Graves, from Austin TX, they collectively brought Edmonton to their knees with the purity and beauty contained within their songs. City and Colour founder, and Alexisonfire guitarist Dallas Green poetically glided into his set with the familiar guitar ambience of "Woman" pouring through the monitors.

The band continued on through an 18-song set, featuring a number of fan favourite tracks such as: "If I Should Go Before You," "Hello, I'm in Delaware" and "Lover Come Back," which left eager concertgoers in awe and some in tears, all the while, with smiles adorned on their faces.

C&C included a tribute cover to send his best wishes and kind regards to Gord Downie, frontman of fellow Canadians the Tragically Hip, as he played a beautiful rendition of the Hip's "Bobcaygeon." The audience roared as the familiar melody soaked through the monitors, so gracefully paired with Green's heavenly voice.  Following up with "The Girl," which featured Green on his own for part of the song, and having his whole band chime in to deliver the song's pounding outro. Lastly, performing an encore with fan favourites "Fragile Bird" and "Sorrow Man", Dallas Green and his band unified to send their gratitude to Edmonton for a rockin' Friday night show.

Having the almighty Lamb of God in town on Sunday night was just the right kind of gig to top off a great weekend. As the Virginian heavy-hitters dominated the stage at Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre to a packed house, accompanied by the likes of opening acts Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity, I couldn't help but feel giddy over the fact that, after years of wishing and waiting, I was finally able to have one of my all time favorite bands in front of my lens.

Baroness Paints the Town "Purple" on Edmonton Stop of 2016 Spring Tour - May 27, 2016

Picking up semi-last minute gigs on a Friday night is never something I will complain about. Especially when it comes to going in blind, so to speak. The discovery of new bands and new music is easily one of the most thrilling parts of my job. Last night, however, I was in for a real treat - as the almighty, Baroness, marched into Edmonton's infamous venue, the Starlite Room, to do some damage on their Spring 2016 tour.
Being someone who's some-what unfamiliar with their music, I couldn't help but feel intrigued as the band took to the stage. But, alas, within the first few bars of Baroness' opening song, that spewed from the monitors, and filled the room with joy and all sorts of other emotions, I was hooked! The gritty melodies paired with soothing vocals was practically a match made in heaven, along with the pulsating rhythms that seemed to have the whole room either bobbing their heads or swaying their bodies back and forth, all the while, the sound of concert goers singing along to every word - Truly a pleasant first-time experience while in the presence of the undeniably epic Baroness!
