Canada's Finest Band Together to Support Fort McMurray at Fire Relief Concert - June 29, 2016

Dana Zuk July 5, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR LIVE NATION ALBERTA & VANDALA MAGAZINE

Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium was packed with 32, 000 screaming fans on Wednesday, June 29th, as some of Canada's finest musicians came together to put on a relief concert for those effected by the horrors that ensued, due to the largest wildfire that our province has ever seen in the northern Alberta city of Fort McMurray.

At the beginning of May, the blaze forced the biggest fire evacuation in our province's history, displacing roughly 88, 000 people, and destroying thousands of homes and business in the process, as it engulfed approximately 1.5 million acres of land in uncontrollable flames. It was not reported until TODAY - July 5th 2016 - that the fire has finally been declared under control. For more information on the Fort McMurray wildfire, visit the Wikipedia page for the fire HERE.

Despite the chaos that unsettled so many lives, the people of Alberta, and many across Canada, began to show unimaginable hospitality to those who had no choice but to flee the inferno. Families making their homes available for other families, crews of people rescuing pets who were left behind, and even local businesses offering free meals and clothing to those who had lost everything. 54 million dollars was donated to the Canadian Red Cross by the citizens of Canada and many across the world, along with many other donations from various charities and organizations.

It wasn't much longer after the evacuation that the Fire Aid concert was announced. The news of Ft. Mac had spread rapidly across the nation, and hit home for many Albertan and Canadian musicians, so many were jumping at the chance to help rally people together to support those in need. The concert was also being broadcast to a local sporting field in the Wood Buffalo community, so those who were able to return to their homes in Fort McMurray could still enjoy the concert.

Headlined by Canadian superstars, Nickelback, the Fire Aid featured a handful of artists of all genres such as: Blue Rodeo, City & Colour, Barney Bentall, Corb Lund, Randy Bachman & The Sadies, Dean Brody, The Rankin Family, Dallas Smith, Alan Doyle & The Beautiful Gypsies, Ian Tyson, Brett Kissel, High Valley, Dear Rouge, Harlequin and Dustin Bentall. Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium quickly filled up as the afternoon progressed, lucky that the weather was on our side, as thundershowers were estimated for the evening - Regardless, I don't think any amount of rain could have put a damper on this gig. With Vancouver's own, Nickelback, ending the night on a high note, the vibe within the stadium was beyond words. Smiling faces, and people embracing was a pleasant sight, but the overall sense of support and community that was shown to each and everyone of the audience members. As a concert photographer, I always wish to see things of that nature with each concert I shoot... Well, my wish was granted I couldn't feel more honored to have been a part of this once in a life time experience.

The infamous politically-charged punk band, Leftover Crack, made their first debut in Edmonton last night, as they stormed the stage at the Starlite Room to unleash their chaos on a sold out house. Opening up the night with Edmonton's very own psycho-billy rockers, The Devil's Sons, to set the mood for what was to come.

Missed the show? Don't worry! Check out the official show review courtesy of Exclaim! Magazine HERE!

Nightwish Delivers Gothic Grace to The Winspear Centre on North American Tour - March 3, 2016

Dana Zuk March 4, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

Edmonton was fed a healthy dose of gothic rock on Thursday March 3rd, as Finland's very own, Nightwish, stormed the stage at the Winspear Centre, delivering a crushing set full of gothic melodies, which had their sold out Edmonton crowd on their feet, dancing, headbanging and singing along to every song.

With the likes of Sonata Arctica and Delain at Nightwish's side, this trio of symphonic-rockers are the first to have performed a show of this nature on the stage of the Winspear Centre; The home of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, as well as the venue of choice for most stand-up comedians who tour through the city. Despite being an out-of-the-ordinary tour to be performing on one of Edmonton's most pristine stages, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and Delain, each, put on a display of intricate, musical mastery in every way possible, leaving memorable impressions on those who gathered to the venue for the evening.

Camping Trip 2015

Dana Zuk August 10, 2015

This past weekend a group of friends and I went on our annual camping trip to our super-secret camp-out spot, just outside of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. We spent the whole weekend there, and like every other year, made tons of memories, too. It was so refreshing to get out into nature and leave all of my cares behind, even if it was just for a few days. The smell of campfire, a group of great friends, and being in the mountains was so welcoming to me, I didn't want to leave!
Carting my side-kick Canon 6D around (naturally) I used the prime weather conditions and our location to my advantage for photos come nightfall. I've always been so fascinated by the night sky, and since we were in a spot that has very little light pollution to the point of faintly seeing the milky way with the naked eye, I grabbed the opportunity to try out astrophotography for the first time. After the first shot, I was hooked!
The next day, a few of us took a trip down to the North Saskatchewan River to hang out, do some fishing, and so our furry bulldog friend, Marley, could go for a swim. While we were there, I couldn't get over how blue and clear the water was! Dipping my toes in to feel the cool sensation of glacier water, I was tempted to hop in myself, but alas, taking pictures of the crystal waters seemed more important, and less chilly.
I couldn't wait for nightfall on Saturday night. The weather was warm, the sky was clear, and I was anxious to see the phenomenal light of the milky way, and trillions of stars flickering amidst the black oblivion of the night sky. I snapped photos of our dazzled sky and silhouetted-scenery for a few hours before the bright moon rose over the horizon, and managed to catch a few cool shots before then.

Check out more of my shots from this weekend below!

Calgary Metalfest 2015

Dana Zuk June 9, 2015

It's that time of year again! Festival season is in full swing and I kicked it off in the best way possible by starting with Calgary Metalfest as they triumphed over the 4th year of the festival.  This was my third year shooting this fest, and my most favorite year of all! Though Calgary Metalfest spans over 4 venues - Ship & Anchor, Vern's , Lord Nelson's and, Dicken's Pub - I spent my weekend hanging out at Dicken's for the main headliner bills.
As metal fans from far and wide gathered in Dicken's Pub on Friday June 5th, eight of western Canada's finest metal bands such as: Moosifix, Riot City, Every Hour Kills, Neck of the Woods,Vile Insignia, Without Mercy, and Begrime Exemious came together to dominate the stage. Headlining night one at Dicken's was Alberta's favorite terrorist-thrashers, Villainizer.  With the release of their newest album - Annihilation of Self - Villainizer deemed their set at the festival as their final show in Calgary, Alberta; Concluding a 5 year-long journey with a bang, Villainizer reigned terror over their chaotic audience as they boomed through a heavy 8 song set, playing fan-favorite tracks such as 'Twin-Tower Two Step', 'Terror Abraxas' and Candlemass cover 'Gallows', including a skit part way through the performance, enacting the hanging of fontman, Rob the Arab Villain (AKA RAV), and closing with their hit song 'Terrorist Metal' with fans moshing and singing along, making Villainizer's farewell to Calgary a truly memorable goodbye.

The final day of Calgary Metalfest is always a blast. The main headliners hit the Dicken's stage, and a charity auction takes place to raise money for the Southern Alberta Make A Wish Foundation of the Stollery Children's Hospital. A whole bunch of cool items were donated this year, such as tickets to other metal festivals in western Canada, an exclusive print by Calgary photographer Monika Deviat, a giant Calgary Metalfest show poster that every band signs, and a rare double neck Schecter Diamond Series guitar. All together we managed to raise $2200.00 Canadian dollars towards helping sick kids in southern Alberta.
Saturday June 6th night's bill, similar to Friday's, consisted of a new batch of eight stellar Canadian bands such as: Apprentice, Noire, Sparky,  Viathyn, Untimely Demise, Caveat, and Into Eternity that were all ready to rumble on stage. The main headliner for June 6th was Calgary's own Kobra & The Lotus, hitting their home town with a devastatingly wicked performance that left Dicken's Pub begging for more. Kicking off the set with title track of their newest album - High Priestess - Kobra & The Lotus hammered their way through a hefty 12 song set, shredding through fan favorite and classic tracks such as Soldier, Welcome To My Funeral, Forever One and 50 Shades of Evil.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... The people who put on Calgary Metalfest every year are true rockstars! They work their butts off to put on one of Alberta's top metal festivals and it certainly doesn't go unnoticed. These people not only are supplying a good time for so many metal fans, but are main contributors of the heavy metal culture and lifestyle in Alberta, and Canada! I'm proud to be a small part of this event, and with the utmost appreciation and gratitude, I say THANK YOU!!

BLEED Shreds the Way to National Finals for Wacken Metal Battle Canada - April 18, 2015

Dana Zuk April 20, 2015

The Pawn Shop hosted the true battle of Alberta on Saturday night, as the 2 finalists from both the Edmonton and Calgary Wacken Metal Battles came together to duke it out for a  chance to represent Alberta at the national finals in Toronto, ON.
After making a huge mark on Alberta's heavy metal music scene, I can't help but send out a big thank you to BLEED, Arrival Of Autumn,AfterEarth & DETHGOD for putting on remarkable performances on Saturday night, and throughout the entire duration of the battles. Each band played their hearts out, and it hasn't gone unnoticed. Metalheads from both Calgary and Edmonton flocked to the hosting venues night after night to show their support, and cheer on their cities representatives to the provincial finals, with Edmonton's own gore-inspired death metallers, BLEED, coming out on top to represent Alberta in the Canadian national finals of this epic battle of the bands, that will send one lucky Canadian band to play at this year's Wacken Open Air in Germany. Good luck BLEED!!
