Annual 'Thaw at the Shaw' Heats Up Edmonton's Downtown Core with Sum 41 and Papa Roach - April 13, 2016

Dana Zuk April 17, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

Downtown Edmonton was lit ablaze on Great-Thursday (the Thursday before Good Friday, clever, I know.) with 100.3 The Bear's annual concert series 'Thaw at the Shaw' featuring punk rockers Sum 41 and rock 'n rollers Papa Roach as the main draws for the 2017 rendition of the event. Opening up the night with Bleeker and Danko Jones, Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre steadily filled with eager folks looking for a hefty dose of rock 'n roll, and they received just that!

Pierce The Veil Unleashes "Rest in Space" Tour to Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre - February 23, 2017

Dana Zuk February 24, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

Pierce the Veil graced Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre with their action-packed Rest in Space tour last night to an all ages audience. A sea of roaring teens crowded the front row and sang to their hearts content to their favourite PTV jams that radiated from the monitors on stage. Complete with confetti and C02 cannons, the band kicked, leaped and hopped their way through their set, making this gig one of the more entertaining shows that I've had in front of my lens so far this year.

Billy Talent Takes Edmonton Higher on Afraid of Heights Tour Stop at the Shaw Conference Centre - February 21, 2017

Dana Zuk February 22, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR EXCLAIM.CA

A buzz was in the air on Tuesday night in Edmonton, as Billy Talent, one of the city's favourite Canadian rock groups, brought their genius to the Shaw Conference Centre with their current Afraid of Heights tour. The energy amongst eager concertgoers of all ages seemed to build in the room as the minutes rolled down until showtime, greatly adding to the anticipation for what was in store.

A wave of roars erupted from the audience as the lights dimmed and each member of the band took to their spots on stage. Starting things off with a bang, the band roared into "Devil in a Midnight Mass," causing a frenzy of shouts from those gathered in the front row. The show lost no momentum as the familiar plucking of "This Suffering" floated out of the monitors soon after.

Billy Talent gave it their all throughout the entirety of their heavy 22-song set, which included a healthy balance of hits both old and new, obliging their die-hard fans and new listeners alike. As the show seemingly came to a close, the band slammed into "Devil on My Shoulder," which seemed to give everyone an extra power-boost, which only intensified as Billy Talent kicked their encore into high gear with "Fallen Leaves."

Concertgoers across the room could be heard singing along to their favourite Billy hits. Looking around, one would be hard-pressed to find someone without a smile on their face or mouthing the words.

Sticking to the typical Canadian ways, the band politely exchanged smiles, thanked those who came out to the show on a weekday night and expressing their immense appreciation for the support that Edmonton so generously provided that evening.

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre was full of both young and old faces, all prepared for a night full of tunes, courtesy of Canadian twin-pop-sensations, Tegan and Sara. As the Vancouverite sisters delivered the perfect pop performance to kick off the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend, voices of the hundreds of concert goers who gathered at the front of the stage could be heard singing the lyrics to every song over the booms of the band, causing contagious smiles to erupt on the faces of those on stage.

Lamb of God Crushes the Shaw Conference Centre on Edmonton Stop of North American Tour - June 5, 2016

Dana Zuk June 6, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR EXCLAIM!.CA

Having the almighty Lamb of God in town on Sunday night was just the right kind of gig to top off a great weekend. As the Virginian heavy-hitters dominated the stage at Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre to a packed house, accompanied by the likes of opening acts Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity, I couldn't help but feel giddy over the fact that, after years of wishing and waiting, I was finally able to have one of my all time favorite bands in front of my lens.

Missed the show? Don't worry! Check out the official show review courtesy of Exclaim! Magazine HERE!

The Offspring Delivers Punk Rock Nostalgia to the Shaw Conference Centre at Annual "Thaw at the Shaw" - March 24, 2016

Dana Zuk March 28, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

I took a trip down good, old memory lane on Thursday night at the Shaw Conference Centre. Nostalgia was thick in the air at the annual event, "Thaw at the Shaw", put on by local radio station, 100.3 the Bear, brought 80's punk rock forefathers, The Offspring, to town, and I couldn't have been more excited to have another band that I grew up listening to, doing what they do best, in front of my lens. Accompanied by the likes of fellow Canadians, Gob and Pigeon Park, this year's rendition of "Thaw at the Shaw" had the house completely sold out and rocking from side to side, start to finish; The perfect way of gearing up myself, and hundreds of other Edmontonians for a radical long weekend.

Slayer Lays Waste to Edmonton with Testament & Carcass at the Shaw Conference Centre - March 15, 2016

Dana Zuk March 17, 2016

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE

One of the most notorious members of thrash metal forefathers, of the largely popular Big-4, graced downtown Edmonton with their sacrilegious presence on Tuesday night. Personally, I couldn't have been more excited about this gig! With their hellish songs of hatred and evil, Slayer, thrashed the cores of their audience at the Shaw Conference Centre, pummeling their fans with a heavy-as-hell 20 song set, spanning their 30-plus-year career.

In tow, fellow metal heavy weights, Testament and Carcass, pleasantly warmed up the crowd, delivering a healthy dosage of guitar-shreddery and double-kick-madness to the masses. Surely, preparing the headbangers and moshers in the audience for the ritualistic-chaos that was about to ensue.

With a white curtain draped in front of the stage, projections of sacrilegious symbols faded in and out, while sweeping across the canvas before displaying Slayer's pentagram logo. As the curtain fell, an eruption of heavily distorted guitars clashed against the roars of the audience. Aggressive from the start, Slayer's distinctive sound oozed out of the amplifiers, causing crowd surfers to worm-roll over the front rail, and a frenzy of whirlwind moshing in the pits below.

It's been roughly five years since I last saw Slayer in concert, so it's safe to say that I was anticipating this show from the day that the Edmonton date was announced. Sharing the common opinion, I was not disappointed with the song choices of Slayer's set list for the night. The band nailed a handful of fan favorite tracks, such as: "Seasons in the Abyss", "Hell Awaits" and, "Black Magic", to name a few. Over all, Slayer put on a display of raw heaviness, showcasing that the spirit of heavy metal does not wither with age. If any band out there is going to show an audience what thrash metal is, what it means, and how it's done, that band will always be Slayer, as they continue to maintain their spot in the ranks of being one of the most influential, and iconic metal bands of this lifetime.

Check out the official Vandala Magazine interview with Slayer's drummer, Paul Bostaph, HERE!
