April Recap - Slipknot, Imagine Dragons, Blackberry Smoke and more

Dana Zuk May 4, 2022

April got real busy, real fast. But you won’t catch me complaining! Kicking off the month properly with Blackberry Smoke was a total treat. I had bought tickets for this show back when it was announced in early 2020, but thanks to the pandemic, it was rescheduled 2 times before finally being able to happen. It was well worth the wait, though! Midway hosted the show, and everything just sounded top notch. Aside from being a wicked-good shoot, Blackberry Smoke nailed every song they played, along with their “Cripple Creek” cover, which put a cherry on top of the evening.

Filming music videos is totally new territory for me, but I was thrilled to film one for Tessitura. Despite the drummer being my partner, and although that sometimes leads to us butting heads when discussing creative things, Gord and I sat on this particular dark, chaotic, strobey concept for some time. So, at last we decided to put our boots to the floor and spent a few days building a shoot-space for the video, and really rounding out the concept. The band is due to release a new album in June, so to unveil the first track off of the album, we applied our concept to the song “Gallows”, and I think it compliments the aggressive mood and overall in-your-face nature of the tune. We’ve got more video things in the bag for Tessitura, but I’m not spilling the beans on those just yet.

I always love shooting local talent. I cut my teeth on these local bands, and I’ll never not answer the call to photograph them when they need. It’s such a mutual benefit, plus there’s SO much hidden talent right here under our noses, and it’s a shame that more people aren’t aware of it. So naturally, when Skepsis asked me to photograph their album release show, I accepted. I’m glad I did, despite the show being a fuckin’ banger, I really needed an evening out. Upon receiving news of there being a death in my family, an evening surrounded by good friends and of course, seeing Skepsis melt faces at Shaker’s Roadhouse was just what my soul needed. I’m so proud of these guys for putting out this banger EP, and it was truly a pleasure to have them in front of my lens.

Watch me throw you a content-curve ball here. In case you didn’t get that joke, the curve ball is photos of a pop artist amongst these images of heavy metal performers. I was able to walk the halls of Rogers Place again this month, and it sure felt good. Imagine Dragons was a great first for getting back into the swing of things with arena-scale shows. This was my second time shooting them, and it was just as exciting as the first. Despite their music not really being my cup of tea, they put on a damn good show, and are hella entertaining to watch. They also won some brownie points among photographers on this tour cycle (I think). If by some wild chance one of them reads this shit blog, thanks for having confetti blasts during your first three songs, dudes!

Now this is the real deal right here. And by this, I mean Slipknot. It was almost poetic in a way — Back in 2015, Slipknot was my first arena show, ever. Now that the pandemic is pretending to be over, fast forward 7 years later, Slipknot is my first arena metal show after 2 years of nothing. It was like it was meant to be in a way. Or so I tell myself that. This set was composed of their crowd pleaser tunes, and people at Rogers Place just ate it up. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen people fly over the barricade that aggressively, and whether it’s because this is the first large-scale metal show to hit Edmonton in 2 years, or if it’s because, well, it’s fucking Slipknot, I’m not sure. Either way, I was anticipating this show for a very long time, and it was a total thrill to shoot Slipknot once again, and it felt even better to be warmly welcomed back into the environment.

Returning to the Starlite Room to shoot European powerhouses in Beast In Black was simply magical. The energy that this band produces and connects to their audience with is something that you don’t see very often, but it was really something to behold. Especially so, considering that this is Beast In Black’s first North American tour. Needless to say, I think their impression of Canada (at least) has been great, which is promising for future tours. Leading the pack with fellow power metallers in Seven Kingdoms, and of course Edmonton’s hometown heroes in Striker all shared the bill with Beast In Black. People went absolutely ape-shit for this show, and it was something that really filled my cup this month.

Rounding out the month of April with some homies is always the cherry on top of my monthly round up of photos. Have I mentioned how much I love working with local talent? I don’t really care if I sound like a broken record with this matter, ‘cause I’m saying it again! (deal with it). I had a wonderful time reconnecting with some old friends in Purple City DIsco as they opened up the Starlite Room for Electric Six on the 30th. Something about local groovy funk bands just gets me, and Purple City Disco is where it’s at.

March Recap - Clutch, Dragonforce and more

Dana Zuk April 2, 2022

This is not a drill, people. Shows are back, and they’re better than ever! March had a healthy dose of gigs coming through Edmonton, and I was happy to have covered a small handful of them. It’s been a minute since I’ve written one of these, so bare with me on this.

I started March off by photographing the elite English power metal group, Dragonforce at the newly renovated Union Hall. After not being in that room for almost 3 years, it sure felt awesome to float around the venue with a camera again. I have this weird satisfaction when it comes to renovated venues — there’s something extra fun for me when I have to re-map my vantage points in these spaces that makes shooting in them for the first time since their renos just exhilarating. I digress. Dragonforce was a real treat to shoot in this newly revamped room; Their production was off the chain, and they even put together a neat shred-sesh between Herman Li and the other guitarists on the tour, all while inviting Edmonton’s own Tim Brown of Striker on stage to join in on the shred.

Bruce Dickinson, metal god, pilot, entrepreneur, fencer, and a true Jack of all Trades graced the Winspear Centre in Edmonton with his presence in March, sharing an intimate evening of story-telling, laughter and fan-interactions with devoted Iron Maiden fans. Dickinson's spoken word consisted of stories ranging from childhood to the early days of Maiden; Speaking candidly about his up-bringing, his family in the early years, and his interests as a young Brit. Taking those gathered at the Winspear for a trip down memory lane, Bruce had his audience cheering, laughing and gasping as he told tales of what shaped him to be the man he is today. Ending the evening by opening up the floor to the audience for a question-and-answer session, Dickinson answered any and all questions that his fans had to ask, and happily said his farewell with hints and promises to return to Edmonton again on a much bigger stage.

My first press shoot of the year was blessed by none other than my pals in Striker. The guys recently welcomed a new member into the band, and are about to kick off a big North American tour that they’ve been looking forward to for a very long time. It’s always a blast having Striker in front of my lens; They’re not shy about letting their personalities shine though, yet can look like total bad asses at the drop of a hat. They recently released a new song called “Strange Love”, and you can check that tune out HERE. Don’t forget to tune into their podcast as well, The Band Chat.

Being in the Starlite Room is always like coming home after a long day of work. So, shooting my pals in Arctos was the cherry on top of that welcoming feeling. This was Arctos’ first performance in almost 3 years, and I was thrilled when they asked me to come out and catch them in action. Their black metal vibe jives so well with their subject matter despite it not being within the typical theme of your ordinary black metal band, and their music just hits differently, more so when it’s masterfully crafted. But maybe I’m just biased because I think this band fucking murders. In a good way.

Ending the month on a high note, southern rockers of Clutch put on a crushing performance at Midway (Formerly known as The Ranch) with EYEHATEGOD and Tiger Cub in tow. This evening felt similar to how it feels when you get together with a long time friend after not seeing each other for a while. There was this welcoming warmth to the room, and the overall vibe of the evening was pleasant and just what I needed. As to be expected, Clutch crushed this performance. It only took 2 years for this show to actually happen, but hey, better late than never right? Best of 2021

Dana Zuk January 8, 2022

Fashionably late. That’s what we’re calling this right here. How does that song by Peaches & Herb go again… “Reunited and it feels so good”, or something along those lines? Needless to say, that song was seemingly projected into my head while event notifications began popping up on my Facebook news feed and email inbox. Who would have thought we would be seeing live music THIS quickly during a global pandemic that almost destroyed the live entertainment industry? Not me, that’s for sure.

Thankfully, the production of vaccines and the willingness to get the double shot in order to get back to normal has brought us to a point where live music could very well survive this whole thing, variants aside. Now, before anybody get’s red in the face from that last statement, I’m not interested in arguing with anybody about vaccinations, or what sort of conspiracies the government is up to, so don’t bother spouting off about that stuff here, because that’s not what we’re here to talk about, capiche? Good.

Back to the fun! In 2021, I photographed a total of 7 shows, 9 press photo shoots, and 2 festivals; little better than last year’s number, but hey, shit’s been wack out there. Of course, with a handful of press photo shoots comes a handful of jump photos. 2021 had it’s share of ups and downs, and these jump photos did too… Get it? Ok I’ll let myself out. But before that, check the jumpers below.

There may not have been much for shooting internationally touring bands in 2021, but the local gigs were something to be thankful for. Although weary and unsure of what is and is not socially acceptable in these strange times, I think the local gigs were something that people really needed. Whether it was an anticipated CD release, a farewell or just a show to get your jollies out, people overall seemed at peace in the crowd. How could they not be? After such a long amount of time with ZERO live music. I can relate th that, big time. You know, that rush and the release of hearing loud music being played aggressively, or simply hearing your favorite song played live once again, especially in a time when we didn’t know if we would have that luxury again.

Come summer time, the announcement of Loud As Hell Festival making a triumphant come back in 2021 after cancelling 2020’s rendition of the fest was heartwarming to see; Scary due to the uncertainty of whether or not it would happen what with shut-downs and such, but heartwarming no less. Along with the uber-exciting news of Canadian vocal powerhouse, Stu Block rejoining Regina’s own Into Eternity, the festival set the tone for fans of heavy metal across Western Canada. It was a weekend of much needed release for the folks who lingered in the long months of isolation, and who just needed to scream, dance, mosh and shred once again. Loud As Hell maintained their usual schedule of a 3 day weekend banger with a kick off party to set the mood. Sadly, I wasn’t able to hit the kick off party this year, but I was able to take in the 3 days of hot, sweaty fun on the main festival grounds.

Shortly after Loud as Hell’s conclusion, I was pleased to catch yet another festival right at home with Trixstar’s Together Again Outdoor Concert Series. I attended 2 days of the festival which was spread out throughout the weekends in the month of August. It felt really great to be back in that setting, shooting big bands on big stages in a ‘vid safe setting. I just hope it can be a thing again come the summer of 2022.

Overall, not a whole lot of music-related things happened in 2021, but on the flipside? Life got REAL interesting. Between life changing advancements like solidifying a career in digital marketing to learning how to drive (it’s still scary) 2021 had much in the way of growth for this kitten, and I just hope the upward climb continues throughout 2022. I was able to put more time into the things that make me happy, and really sink into working on my passion-project that I call The Edmonton Dog Blog (if you’re a crazy dog lover like me, check it out on Instagram HERE).

As I bring this pitiful year-end blog to a close, I need to extend a nice, healthy THANK YOU! Thank you everyone who has supported me throughout 2021, whether it was calling me for photo services, or referring me to your friends, thank you for letting me be a small part of your lives as musicians, music fans and lovers of photography. You know the drill, I’m bringing another year end blog to a close, the best way I know. I've sorted through the hundreds of photos that I've snapped over the course of the year and have compiled some of my personal favorites into a little gallery (in no particular order) for you to feast your eyes upon. I want to wish everyone (especially you ride or die homies who stuck through this blog and made it this far) all the love, happiness and success in 2022! Let's kick it’s ass together. Best of 2020

Dana Zuk December 31, 2020

Well… This is awkward. Totally kidding, but you know… not really. 2020 was looking to be rather promising, but thanks to COVID-19, it was completely turned upside down, and has absolutely annihilated the world we once knew it, along with the music and entertainment industry to the point where it’s repair is questionable. Now, I’m not about to flip this into a big controversial sob story; Instead, I’m wanting to take a positive approach to reflecting on the year. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of 2020, and shine some light on the positives that, now looking back, I’m extremely grateful for:

In 2020, I photographed a total of 7 shows, 10 press photo shoots, and a whopping 0 festivals; a steep fall from last year’s numbers, for obvious reasons. But luckily, I was happy to have photographed a portion of those few events for my ride or die outlets: Concertworks and the Starlite Room, Station on Jasper, Exclaim! & Pure Grain Audio. Along with providing photographic services to a handful of local artists.

I also had the great pleasure of being a guest on my friend Daymien Bourrie’s podcast, No Bad Ideas. We talked about all kinds of stuff involving my career, the highlights, and what I was most looking forward to in the year. Looking back on it now, it’s a little strange hearing myself express my hopes for 2020. If only I had the gift of foresight (lol). You can check out my episode on Daymien’s podcast right HERE and don’t forget to smash that subscribe button. I also began dabbling in the world of video. I’m no pro, but it’s hella fun. I’ve filmed 3 videos so far, one for my dear darling Gord, another for his band Tessitura, and one for the drummer, and my great friend Jesse of Juliet Ruin. Gord and I have actually been tag-teaming these videos, and I think we’re doing a pretty good job of it so far. If you want to check them out for yourself, you can peep Gord’s video HERE, Tessitura’s video HERE and Juliet Ruin’s video HERE.

Keeping up with my tradition of having bands jump for me during press photoshoots, I wasn’t about to let 2020 ruin that. Not for a second. So once again, I am bringing you yet another very special gallery of jumping bands. It’s a fun concept and it’s even more fun to be a part of! Check it below:

I wasn’t able to take part in a whole bunch of shows this year (obvi) but the ones I was able to be a part of were total bangers. I like to keep all of my sticky pass photo-credentials, and usually, I have a nice collection of them hanging on my wall by this time of year. But, as I’m sure you can assume thanks to the cover photo of this blog, I only scored one in 2020. Luckily, it was my 2020 kick off gig, courtesy of Alexisonfire. That show kicked some serious ass, and I’m glad I was able to catch it. I also did a handful of interesting press photoshoots this year, and I specifically want to note photographing Arcane Tyrant on the snowiest day of the year. In Edmonton, I think we got like, two feet of snow that day? I don’t know for sure, but it was a lot. Despite the shit weather conditions, they totally rocked their shoot like pros.

Sifting through my photos from this year and compiling a "favorites” gallery was bringing up all kinds of weird feelings. I’m sitting here remembering what it’s like to feel that rush before a band hits the stage, and wondering if the possibility of being in a packed venue will ever be a thing again. It’s hard to not get cynical and sad when thinking about that sort of thing. 2020 may have been a total asshole of a year, but it’s taught me that resilience is key when it comes to survival, and how important it is to stay positive and surround yourself with the things that make you happy. Despite my longing for the photo pit, I was fortunate enough to find solace in other things this year. My garden was off the chain and more lush than it’s ever been before, I rekindled my love for reading, and put more time into giving a damn about myself.

But, I digress. Summarizing the year as a whole is difficult to say the least, but thankfully, the first quarter was lit. To everyone who has supported me throughout 2020; Whether it was sharing my posts, referring me to your friends or hiring me for whatever your photo needs may have been, from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! Thank you for letting me be a small part of your lives as musicians, music fans and lovers of photography. You know the drill, I’m bringing another year end blog to a close, the best way I know. February Recap - Soulfly, Bedouin Soundclash and More

Dana Zuk March 1, 2020

Starting February off on the right foot, I spent a day in studio photographing Gord Alexander. He is one of Edmonton’s elite drummers in the heavy metal community, an active member in the local music scene, and my significant other. So naturally, my mission for this shoot was to make him look extra good. Shooting portraits of musicians in this way is always exciting for me. It’s one thing to work with a whole band, and it’s another to work with an individual. You get to peel away that “collective band-brain” exterior, where everyone needs to be cohesive with details in unison, and instead, focus on the one, single human in front of your lens. It’s an opportunity to really make that one person shine, and I’m always glad to take that opportunity. We spent the day shooting Gord and his drum kit in Edmonton’s gorgeous Studio A on their super cool cyclorama wall. This shoot was intended to be really simple, and was done with an easy 3 light set up, with soft boxes on the strobes.

Following my shoot with Gord, I was invited to hang out and shoot some behind the scenes photos with my pals in Striker. After recently being nominated for a Juno Award, the guys were busy filming some studio footage in the gorgeous Audio Department, running through their set of select songs, and getting key footage for new releases and announcements to come over the course of 2020. Working with the guys in this setting is a favorite for me, because their personalities really shine through when in this type of setting and it always makes for great candid shots. It’s always a pleasure working with the kats of Striker, not only are they an elite band coming out of Edmonton, but they’re some of the hardest working people I’ve been blessed with working with, and I always leave shoots with them feeling energized and motivated to kick ass and get shit done.

Fellow Canadians in Bedouin Soundclash visited The Starlite Room early on in the month, bringing their ska-funkiness to a reasonably full room, despite there being a total blizzard happening outside earlier that day. With their hip-hop opener Odario of Grand Analog getting things warmed up, the night was set off on the right foot for good tunes and good memories. I love shooting in the Starlite Room. This place not only has TONS of music history, but it’s considered a historic building in the city of Edmonton as well, and it has some of the nicest venue staff that I’ve had the privilege of working with. It’s a very special thing to play the Starlite stage, reasonably so. For this show, the audience was pretty relaxed and laid-back, so I didn’t have to work too hard making my way through the crowd, so I opted to shoot a little wider than usual, with intentions of catching the full scope of the show while getting those key ‘tight’ shots.

I spent Valentine’s Day back at the Starlite Room, this time totally in my element, photographing a PACKED metal show. The iconic group, Soulfly was in town with thrashers in Toxic Holocaust as support. Throwing a bone to the local metal community, the likes of local heavy weights in Tessitura and Ravage Red we’re invited onto the bill to open up the night and get the ball rolling for what ended up being a wicked sold out show. This being a sold out event came with its fair share of challenges; minimal space to move around and compose shots, and the crowd was damn rowdy, so I remedied these expected and unavoidable issues by using a long lens in a few notably “safe” spots in the venue, and having my head on a swivel. The lighting gods smiled upon me this night, because the stage was lit up exceptionally well, making my life and job so much easier. Needless to say, I walked away from this one feeling good and excited to work on the photos.

Later on in the month, I got together with my pals Karli and Colton to photograph their pop punk project called Mutual Friends, as well as some branding photos for Karli’s vocal coaching business called The Inner Voice. We cracked out both shoots in one evening, and I think we managed to get some pretty cool stuff that embodied the vibe that Mutual Friend’s is all about, as well as capturing portraits of Karli in a way that best represents the vision she had with this shoot. I used a couple different methods for both shoots that I did that evening.
For Mutual Friends, we did a few photos out on the street of Whyte Ave. Anybody who’s shot portraits on any street after the sun has gone down knows how atrocious street lamp light can be, so to remedy this, I slapped a speedlite on my camera, adjusted the power output, and went to town with shooting. After a few shots on the street, we went inside and shot off a few more snaps in the audio studio space we borrowed for the evening. I had Karli and Colton sitting centered on the couch in the room, and I placed an LED ring light in front of them as my key light, with 2 Philips Hue Play lights on either side, both set to red. I was able to make the red’s in that shot SCREAM without over powering skin tones, while adding a little depth with some grainy textures to the shot.
With Karli’s portrait session, we had the same lighting set up with the couch, we just changed the color of the side lights to magenta and blue, and added a painted sound treatment canvas that was already in the studio behind the couch for some extra depth and color. We then went into the vocal booth in the studio, being a singer, we both agreed that having some shots in the booth with a fancy microphone was necessary, and for this portion, I used the ring light as my key light once again, the ceiling lights as extra fill and a boomed hue lamp over head, in purple for that added pop of color.

Bringing the month to a close with the likes of my Calgary pals in Traveler and Riot City was the cherry on top of a reasonably busy month. Both Traveler and Riot City crushed their sets at Shakers Roadhouse before teaming up to hop across the pond for their European Tour. Thankfully, Edmonton gave them both a warm send off. Both of these bands were a total pleasure to shoot for a couple reasons… One: They absolutely SHRED the stage-presence department. Two: Hair, hair and more hair! And as for an added bonus: Shakers is an awesome place to shoot.;The stage is a nice height to really get those intimate shots, and despite the minimal lighting set up, it’s well lit. It was quite easy to make all of these kats look like rock stars, and it’s all thanks to them knowing what’s up when being photographed on stage. In post, I wanted to really make the colors from this gig shine, both Riot City and Traveler are such musically vibrant bands, so I purposely neglected to dampen the majority of the primary colors that were present in these shots. I find that doing this properly can really make the scene in the photos pop, as well as directing the viewer’s (that’s you!) eye to the key details in the finished shot.

January Recap - ALEXISONFIRE, Coleman Hell and More

Dana Zuk February 4, 2020

It’s 2020, a new decade! We’re feeling good, we’re trying new things! This blog series being one of them. I’m going to be sharing recap’s of my work each month for YOU the viewer, because I feel like I owe it to ya, and to help you get a little insight on what I’m up to behind the scenes. So, two things moving forward. One: Be prepared to read a little bit, or don’t. Two: Be prepared to see a bunch of my personal favorite shots that I’ll be taking of all kinds of events and artists each month. So, without further ado, I give you my take on January 2020:

Getting a kick start on the new year is always a hit or miss in the industry of concert photography. You either hit the ground running from the previous year, or you simply just… hit the ground. What I mean by that is, your year starts off at light speed or it’s slow as hell, and it differs for everybody. For me, personally, January started off so painfully slow, but I can’t tell you how happy I am to have finished the month off on the right track.

The first gig of the year took place at Rogers Place, with the likes of fellow Canadian’s in ALEXISONFIRE in front of the lens. This wasn’t the first time I’ve photographed these kats, so my 6D’s and I knew what to expect walking into the pit for this one; dark, strobey lights with a TON of movement on stage. Because of this, ALEXISONFIRE can a bit of a challenge to capture, but I always walk away with something that I’m satisfied with whenever I have the chance to shoot them.

Following ALEXISONFIRE, I was able to get together for a brief photo session with Illyrian, my pals from Calgary, just hours before shooting Hyperia, another group of Calgary pals, during their Edmonton CD release show at the Rendezvous Pub. Hyperia just released their debut full length album entitled “Insanitorium” and it’s everything the thrash-metal enthusiast needs. You can check it out and grip your copy of that record HERE. Shooting a band like them in a venue like the Rendezvous is bittersweet. I mean no disrespect when I say that, after all, the Rendezvous is one of the many places where I cut my teeth when I first started photographing bands when I was a young pup. By bittersweet, I simply mean that the venue itself is cool, and is a friendly, comfortable and great place to catch local talent, but the lighting on stage is… Dark. Not super ideal for photos, but hey. I’m always up for a challenge. With a fast lens on my camera, I was able to catch some key moments of Hyperia ripping apart the room. Luckily, I walked away from the gig feeling satisfied with my shots, and Hyperia loves the gallery I turned over, so it turned out to be a win-win for everyone

With Illyrian, we were pretty crunched for time, and didn’t have much of a plan in place for our photo shoot, so we decided to kick it old-school, and shoot in the back alley behind the venue. Living in Canada, there’s really no way to avoid having some amount of snow to work in and/or around for about 9 months of the year, so making an urban, snowy environment look cool can be a real pain in the ass. So in order to get that moody, don’t-fuck-with-us vibe, I approached this shoot with the most simple light set up; One light and an umbrella on a light stand, and I’m quite happy with the results. The shoot for Illyrian was a little over due; Since our last shoot, they’ve welcomed a new guitarist into the band, and have announced some pretty wicked shows, one of which is coming up in April. But I digress, I’m glad we were able to make the time to kick it while they played Edmonton, and get some sweet photos in the process. The event page for their next show in Edmonton is linked HERE. The band fucking rips, so I recommend checking them out.

Illyrian

Switching gears to my first show of the year working at my house gig at Station on Jasper, pop artist Coleman Hell took to the stage for an afternoon performance during Edmonton’s newest multi-venue music festival Winterruption YEG. Hitting the stage at 4pm to a relatively full house, the show went off without a hitch. This was the first time I’ve had Coleman Hell in front of my lens, but I can assure you, that it will not be the last. Being a house photographer at Station, I’ve got the place mapped out for just about any performance to ensure that I can get optimal shots of the artists that I’m called in to shoot. This place has some of the best lighting in the city, and it’s truly a pleasure to take in so many wicked artists who hit the stage, Coleman Hell being one of them. Between his funky dance moves and the vibrant lighting colors on stage, it was a treat to shoot this fellow Canadian for an afternoon.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I closed January with yet ANOTHER Calgary band. My pals in Hazzerd graced the stage in Edmonton at Temple (Starlite Room) for their CD release show, celebrating their second full length album “Delirium” with their Edmonton fans. Hazzerd always brings the heat and exactly what you would expect out of a balls-to-the-wall thrash metal band whenever they play Edmonton, and going on stage to a hot and rowdy Friday night crowd was truly fitting for this band’s set. Their new record is absolutely killer, you can check it out and buy your copy of it HERE. Despite having to dodge the rowdies from time to time, I absolutely love shooting at Temple. The stage is a nice height for that band-audience intimacy, it’s spacious enough for lots of action, there are a bunch of great vantage points to get optimal shots of the band, and it’s generally always lit evenly; Pair this with a fast, wide angle lens, and you’ve got yourself a recipe fit for stellar shots. The guys were stoked to see the gallery I turned over, and I know this is so cliche, but that was the most rewarding part of the whole show.

Best of 2019

Dana Zuk December 31, 2019

Another year of shooting shows and taking in new musical experiences is in the bag! It’s hard to believe that I’m once again writing a year end blog, it seems as though 2019 has unapologetically flown by, and so much has happened, that I struggle to collect my thoughts on the high and low points of my year. I’ve really dropped the ball on keeping up with this portion of my website, and have been inconsistent with sharing galleries and blog posts with you all, and for that, I must apologize. But you know how it is, life gets busy, and shit happens. But I couldn’t deprive you of a yearly recap! So once again, I’m sitting here reminiscing on the year with a glass of wine in hand, a few stories to tell, and a bunch of favourite photos to share with you.

In 2019, I photographed a total of 74 shows, 20 press photo shoots and 7 festivals in Edmonton and across Western Canada; It was a busy year to say the least! A handful of my photos made it to print in numerous editions of Exclaim!, and I was pleased to have been a small part of some of the heaviest underground shows in town thanks to Concertworks and the Starlite Room. I also started working as a house photographer at Station on Jasper, and have been a contributing photographer to Pure Grain Audio since August.

As some of you long-time followers will know, during my press shoots, I always encourage the bands to jump for me with the purpose of creating a calendar. Though I have not made a calendar of these folks for a second year now, I have bigger plans for these images, and I’m hoping to announce my plans once I set the wheels in motion. Despite the lack of calendar provided, I still want you to appreciate them as much as I do, so I've included a special little gallery of these kat's jumping for joy, just for you! Check it below, and make sure you check out their music as well.

The shows that I had the pleasure of taking in over the course of 2019 are too many to name, however, there are quite a few that really stand out in my mind when asked which were my favorites. I was lucky to check a few artists off of my must-photograph list such as Snoop Dogg and the Backstreet Boys, as well as revisiting a few others that always catch my fancy like Ghost and July Talk. Festival season had it’s fair share of favorites as well, like Hozier and Brandi Carlile at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and saying a last farewell to heavy metal royals in Slayer, as they coined the debut year of inner-city metal festival Chaos AB as their final performance in Alberta. Putting the cherry on top of my summer, I made my way to British Columbia to take in Armstrong Metalfest, and Drumheller, Alberta for Loud As Hell. These are two festivals that I’ve been spending my summers at for quite some time now, and each year, they only get better and better. Closing out the year with a bang, I had the great honor of once again being invited with photograph the half-time show for the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary, Alberta featuring the likes of country music superstar, Keith Urban. Please do keep in mind, that these are just a few of my favorite events over 2019. Had I dipped into my memories of the events featuring the local talent I was lucky enough to witness, we’d be here for a hella long time.

Summarizing the end of the year is always a challenge, I don’t think it ever wont be, to be completely honest. But one thing is for sure, if I’ve learned anything over the course of 2019, it’s to be thankful for your opportunities and the people who stand by you when the going gets tough; Appreciate the good times and keep your head up during the hard ones! Not every year is going to be a success, but let’s just put a Bob Ross inspired spin on those years and coin them as ‘happy little building blocks’. Hah, I’ll take that! Shit happens, but life goes on, and it wouldn’t be worth it if I wasn’t doing something I love. But let’s bring this reminiscent and semi-cynical blog to a close, shall we? To everyone who has supported me throughout 2019; Whether it was sharing my posts, referring me to your friends or hiring me for your biggest event of the year, from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! Thank you for letting me be a small part of your lives as musicians, music fans and lovers of photography. So, as I bring another long-ass, year end blog to a close, I've sorted through thousands upon thousands of photos that I've snapped over the year and have compiled some of my personal favorites into a little gallery (in no particular order) for you to feast your look-balls upon. I want to wish everyone (especially you kats who stuck through this blog and made it this far) all the love and utmost success in 2020, let's kick it's ass together! From my heart to yours, HAPPY NEW YEAR! <3

SLAYER - Day 1

SLAYER - Day 1

Chaos AB Festival Rocks the Heart of Edmonton - July 26-27

Dana Zuk July 30, 2019

PHOTOGRAPHED FOR EXCLAIM.CA

I know, I know, I suck at this blogging thing and even more at keeping it up to date. I’m feeling ambitious today, so you’re getting a little recap of my weekend and a couple galleries to wash it down.

One of the most talked about events in western Canada commenced over the weekend of July 26th and 27th; Chaos AB debuted as a large scale metal and hard rock festival in Alberta’s capital which had lovers of aggressive music anxious for it’s arrival. Despite a few hiccups along the way (AKA: Losing Rob Zombie as a headliner) the festival’s first ever weekend went off without a hitch.

Kicking off day 1 in Kinsmen Park with hot temperatures and even hotter bands, the afternoon of metal had folks of all ages eager and wanting more. the lineup for Friday consisted of: Light The Torch, Animals As Leaders, GWAR, Slayer and Disturbed as our headlining act. This being an extra special day for the festival and heavy metal history, metal kings Slayer bid their final farewell to Alberta, making this their last appearance ever in the province. Though skeptics will question whether it’s legitimately their final show in Alberta, Slayer had a sentimental send off that I’m sure no one will forget.

Day 2 of the festival was promising for many. Despite the controversy of shock-rock-god Rob Zombie mysteriously dropping off of the bill 2 weeks prior and being replaced with British rockers The Cult, and despite the weather being rainy and overall total shit, the attendance for the second show was staggering. Starting late due to a lightning stand down and an evacuation from the hour of torrential rain we received, the show kicked off with Selfish Things, who helped warm the crowd up after the cool down pour. The rest of the day consisted of the likes of The Dirty Nil, Royal Tusk, One Bad Son, Headstones, The Cult (no photos) and the dark emperor himself, Marilyn Manson as the closing act.

Even though the rain was on and off all day, it certainly didn’t put a damper on the spirits of festival goers, as Kinsmen Park remained full and alive from start to finish. The festival will certainly be one that people talk about for ages to come, and I truly cannot wait to see what next year has in store!

GALLERY: Tim Baker Sings Songs About Life, Love and St.John's at Station - May 29, 2019

Dana Zuk May 31, 2019

Despite yesterdays temperatures of 32C, many flocked to the Station on Jasper last night to catch Newfoundland and Labrador native Tim Baker as he delivered a healthy dose of folky songs to everyone in the room. He told many stories about his time in St.John’s and love that has come and gone, all while keeping the air in the room light and comical, truly giving people the mid-week release they needed.
